Volunteer of the Month

Why did you choose to volunteer with Eden Housing?
I believe in building community and I see Eden Housing as a place that strives to bring people from all walks of life together. I especially have a heart for immigrant families who are trying to put down roots in a new country. It is not easy, especially with the high cost of living here in the Bay Area, but they are working hard to build a better life for themselves, and I applaud them for that.
What have you done as a volunteer? Please describe your role and what you have worked on.
It has been a privilege serving in Eden’s Extended Learning Program (ELP) at Owl’s Landing in Livermore. I have tutored the children in the after-school program helping them with homework, Eden’s reading program, and arts and crafts. Additionally, I have assisted with quarterly events for families and seniors at other properties in Livermore.
What have you learned through your volunteer experience? Have there been any surprises?
I have enjoyed getting to know the parents of the children in ELP. I feel that we have a common bond; we all want the best for the children, and we are working together to provide them with the resources they need to succeed.
What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing?
I love the variety of ages that I interact with from toddlers all the way to seniors. Each group has something unique and special to share!
Are there any tips that you would share for someone else who is considering volunteering?
It may take time to feel comfortable and you may wonder, “Where do I start?” Don’t worry about what you should be doing, but just try to get to know the people. Sit down next to them and listen to their stories. You may find you have a lot in common!
Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life?
I am a former ESL teacher and would love to help English learners.
