Solaire Apartments
427 Auzerais Avenue, San Jose, California
Community Type: Family, Homeless or Risk of Homelessness, Other, Senior
Property Description
Eden Housing is developing a new 130-unit apartment community in the Diridon Station Area of San Jose. The site is located a ½-mile from Diridon Station at the corner of Auzerais Ave and Delmas Ave, in a dynamic area close to multiple transit stations where the City and Google are both investing significant resources. Solaire Apartments will provide homes to households that are in threat of being priced out of the housing market, but are essential to a strong and diverse community, including the lower-income workforce, and individuals and families who have experienced homelessness in the past.
Solaire Apartments will reserve half of its units as permanent supportive housing to address the homelessness crisis in the County of Santa Clara. Those units will be supported by Section 8 project-based vouchers and supportive services will be provided by the County’s Office of Supportive Housing. The remaining units will be restricted to households earning 50–60% of Area Median Income (AMI).
The project will be built on a 1.02-acre L-shaped site and the development will include:
- Outdoor space with fitness loop, community garden, and drought-tolerant landscaping
- Community room
- Computer learning center
- Fitness/yoga studio
- Bicycle storage room
- Laundry room
- On-site supportive and resident services
- All electric utility service with no gas infrastructure installed
- Solar photovoltaics system
- EV charging stations
The project’s name of “Solaire Apartments” was inspired by a few elements. Solaire is a French word that means “relating to or derived from the sun.” We chose a French word to commemorate the French heritage of the neighborhood, which we learned about from community members. The project’s cross streets of Auzerais Ave and Delmas Ave are named after Antoine Delmas and John Auzerais, who were early settlers of San Jose and prominent members of society who had emigrated from France. The surrounding area was known as the French Gardens in the 1800s because of the large population of French residents and their expertise in agriculture.
The sun signifies new beginnings, renewal, and vitality, which are some of the characteristics we want to embody in this community. We incorporated the sun motif into the building murals located at the parking garage entrance and the interior courtyard. The name Solaire is also a nod to the solar panels covering the roof and to one of the building’s most distinctive features, the “brise soleil,” which is the series of horizontal slats that extends the height of the building and shades vertical stretches of glazing that bring light into the corridors.
