September 7, 2022 — Eden Housing has been selected by the County of San Diego to negotiate the development of 120 affordable housing units in the City of San Diego at 5001 73rd Street. Centrally located in the College Area community of San Diego near San Diego State University, the new units will be available to low-income residents who are struggling to keep up with the escalating rental market in San Diego County.

“We are honored to be selected for this unique opportunity,” said Andrea Osgood, Senior Vice President of Real Estate Development for Eden Housing. “We are committed to creating a unique, sustainable community that reflects both the County’s and the wider community’s vision for the property.”

Imbued with universal design principles, the new units will be accessible to people of all abilities as well as responsive to the needs of families and individuals. Amenities will include a ground floor community room, computer room, dedicated office space for case management, electric vehicle charging stations, two elevated courtyards and a playground for young children. One-fourth of the units will be set-aside as permanent supportive housing for families and individuals struggling with homelessness.

“High-quality affordable housing promotes independence and inclusion,” said David Estrella, County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, Director Housing and Community Development Services. “These much-needed units will welcome residents with the warmth, dignity and respect that they deserve.”

In terms of green design features and local landscaping, plans for the all-electric building include on-site solar panels, heat-pump water heaters and a draught-tolerant landscape.  The project is in alignment with the San Diego Association of Government’s Sustainable Communities strategy by providing much needed affordable housing with nearby transit, bicycle and pedestrian improvements.

As one of California’s largest and oldest nonprofit developers with over 50 years of experience, Eden Housing has a track record of partnering with counties and other public agencies to develop affordable communities on public land parcels. The Eden Housing development team is uniquely qualified for this particular development and commands a depth of experience with designing, building, managing, and providing services for families and individuals with special needs.
