ABOUT MULBERRY GARDENS SENIOR APARTMENTS:

Mulberry Gardens Senior Apartments is a four-story building that will provide 59 affordable housing units for the senior community of Riverside. The apartments are situated on a 1.26-acre State-owned site, which was previously filled with vacant one-story office buildings. The 100% affordable housing development will be built alongside the second phase of the project, Mulberry Gardens Family Apartments, which will share several community spaces. The project is being financed through funding from the State of California, County of Riverside, City of Riverside, the California Energy Commission and Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.

The Mulberry Gardens Family Apartments project will provide 150 units that will offer a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom homes for low-income households in Riverside. Together these two projects will add 209 units of affordable housing to the Riverside community.

Located less than one mile from downtown Riverside, the two-phase project will feature a variety of shared community amenities such as a centrally located community room, management offices, mail and parcel room, laundry facilities, and a building maintenance shop. Outdoor open spaces will create “loud” and “quiet” zones to allow for a broad range of age-groups on site to engage in activities that suit their needs. The community is anchored by the pedestrian paseo between the two buildings, which includes seating and gathering spaces, a bocce ball court, and a walking loop running along the property edges, including the sidewalks on Mulberry and Holding.

QUOTES:

“We are proud to support the Mulberry Gardens Senior Apartments project, an example of how strategic use of state excess land can create sustainable, affordable housing solutions,” said Gustavo Velasquez, Director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development. “This project not only addresses the urgent need for affordable homes in Riverside, but also sets a precedent for future developments. By leveraging state resources effectively, we can enhance quality of life for California seniors on a fixed income while fostering inclusive communities of opportunity.”

“California is working hard to tackle the shortage of affordable housing across the state,” said California Department of General Services Director Ana M. Lasso. “Partnerships between the state and local governments and organizations can lead to amazing projects like Mulberry Gardens. We look forward to even more partnerships that allow us to identify areas with the most development potential and direct resources to the areas of greatest need.”

“Today marks a significant milestone for the Mulberry Gardens projects,” said Eden Housing CEO Linda Mandolini. “We cannot wait to add more than 200 safe, affordable housing options for seniors and families in the Riverside community. This project is a testament to our unwavering commitment to creating inclusive and sustainable communities where everyone can thrive. I am grateful to our partners for their continued support; together we are building a brighter future for all residents.”
