Eden Housing and For the Future Housing to Break Ground on Pacific Station North Apartments

May 15, 2024

May 15, 2024 — On Monday, May 20, at 12 PM, a groundbreaking celebration will be held to mark the commencement of construction on Pacific Station North Apartments, a 128-unit development situated in downtown Santa Cruz at 920 Pacific Avenue.

This transformative project marks the final phase of Pacific Station, a visionary, transit-oriented redevelopment program located between Pacific Avenue and Front Street. Supported by funds from the City of Santa Cruz, the Affordable Housing & Sustainable Communities (AHSC) program, and the Infill Infrastructure Grant (IIG) program, the project includes a mix of studio, 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments for individuals and families.

Thirty-two units will be set aside for extremely low-income households, with an additional 21 units targeted towards individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and 11 homes for families in the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Cruz’s Family Unification Program. The remaining units will be restricted to individuals and families earning less than 50% and 60% of Santa Cruz County’s area median income, fostering socio-economic diversity within the community.

“We are proud to be part of this collaborative endeavor,” said Jim Rendler, Principal of For the Future Housing, Eden’s development partner on the project. “Our mission is to enhance the communities in which we live and work by developing high quality affordable housing, and we know this new community will make a tangible difference in the lives of Santa Cruz residents.”

The project is designed to be all-electric and is targeting an LEED Platinum certification, underscoring its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Resident amenities will include a 1,250 SF community room, central laundry facility, computer room, and a versatile space designed for after-school programs. The development will also feature a ground floor retail and commercial space, a new METRO bus transit hub, a pedestrian walkway, and key infrastructure that will serve the entire Pacific Station redevelopment.

“At the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District, we recognize the pivotal role of transit in fostering accessible communities,” said METRO CEO Corey Aldridge. “The Pacific Station North Apartments exemplify our commitment to enhancing mobility and connectivity for all residents of Santa Cruz.”

The May 20 groundbreaking ceremony will include a speaking program featuring project partners and elected officials. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to enjoy lunch and complimentary tours of recently completed projects near Pacific Station North.

“This important milestone event symbolizes our collective resolve to address the pressing need for affordable housing in Santa Cruz,” said Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley. “Through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, we are laying the groundwork for inclusive and vibrant communities that offer safe housing for all.”

In addition to Mayor Keeley, elected representatives in attendance will include Congressman Jimmy Panetta, Santa Cruz County Supervisor Justin Cummings, and representatives for Senator Laird and Assemblymember Gail Pellerin. “The Pacific Station North Apartments project will be a great asset to this community that will provide safe, sustainable housing for so many individuals and families,” said Eden Housing CEO Linda Mandolini. “Our hope is that these new homes foster stability and opportunity for
