Why did you choose to volunteer with Eden Housing?
I have always enjoyed volunteering and was excited at the fact I could volunteer in a way that enhanced my overall work experience.
What have you done as a volunteer? Please describe your role and what you have worked on.
I am currently a Financial Coach- I work with one of Eden’s residents with the goal of improving their financial literacy and sustainability. I have been on the Scholarship and NNO Committees and volunteered at NNO events at various properties. I always try to volunteer at any ribbon cutting, groundbreaking, or maintenance appreciation event, as well. I am thankful to have worn many volunteer hats during my 2+ years at Eden.
What have you learned through your volunteer experience? Have there been any surprises?
I have learned what community means and what it looks like. I have lived in apartments most of my life and never knew my neighbors, never had events that gave me the chance to interact with my community. It’s refreshing to see in a time where the norm has become to not know your neighbors.
What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing?
I love the chance to interact with residents and site staff. I must say I have a soft spot for seniors; you can really tell they enjoy & appreciate the events because they always share their gratitude with you which is a very rewarding feeling. Additionally, most of my communication with site staff is through email so it’s nice to meet them in person and get a chance to visit their properties.
Are there any tips that you would share for someone else who is considering volunteering?
I really encourage my fellow colleagues to take the time to volunteer at 1 Eden event this year. I understand we are all very busy but I think it’s a great opportunity to be reminded of why we work so hard.
Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life?
I love to coupon! You may have seen Extreme Couponing on TLC, I’m not THAT extreme but I do have a mini stockpile in my garage! I love to get things at a deep discount or even better, for free.
