Antioch Groundbreaking for Affordable Housing

West Rivertown II to Break Ground

Antioch:   On February 9th at noon, the City of Antioch and nonprofit developer Eden Housing, Inc. will celebrate the start of construction of West Rivertown II Apartments at the construction site at 712 'I' Street, Antioch.  This is the second phase of an affordable housing community that opened in 2003, also built by Eden Housing. This new development will provide an additional 40 townhouse-style affordable apartments for families in Antioch's West Rivertown District, the city's historic riverfront shopping district.  This new housing community will further enhance Antioch's vision for a vibrant "urban village."  The groundbreaking event speakers will include Mayor Donald Freitas, new Assemblymember Mark DeSaulnier and Contra Costa County Supervisor Federal Glover.

Both West Rivertown I & II developments are within walking distance of Antioch's revitalized historic river front district for shopping, restaurants and services. The housing is near public transit, elementary, intermediate and high schools, as well as public parks and a community center.

West Rivertown II will be a community of ten two-story and three-story townhouse-style apartment buildings and one community building of one-two-and three-bedroom apartments.   A 1,856 sq. ft. community building will contain a computer learning center/service coordinator office, property management office, a full kitchen, two bathrooms, a maintenance shop and a laundry facility.  Amenities will include dishwashers and garbage disposals, and a patio adjacent to the community building with two barbeques and picnic tables for the tenants' enjoyment.  There will be a nearly 1,600 sq. ft. lawn area adjacent to the community building, and two children's play structures.

Eden's Project Developer, Woody Karp, said, "West Rivertown II will create an opportunity for low income families in Antioch to live in a supportive community setting.  This project addresses the need for affordable housing in this growing community by creating 40 new affordable housing units to low and very low-income households who earn 30% to 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI)."  The new residents of West Rivertown will be selected by a lottery process, as well as credit and low-income qualifications. Families who are interested in obtaining more information and/or putting their contact info on an interest list may call Eden Housing at (510) 582-1460. The housing is expected to be completed in the spring of 2008, and leasing info will be available further into construction.

Onsite resident support services and programs, such as computer learning programs, will be provided free of charge by Eden's nonprofit affiliate, Eden Housing Resident Services, Inc. The property will be managed by Eden Housing Management, Inc.
