Meet Eden's Interns

This summer, seven driven and talented individuals partook in Eden’s Internship program. This 12-week paid internship allows college students the ability to learn the ropes of various departments while supporting Eden’s mission: to build and maintain well-managed, service-enhanced affordable housing communities that meet the needs of lower income families, seniors, and persons with disabilities. Two interns (Vicente and Lillian) will continue to work part-time at Eden throughout the year.

What college/university do/did you attend, and what did you study? I have earned two Associate Degrees from College of San Mateo in Communications and Social Science. As of today, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's of Science in International Management at Menlo College in Atherton, California.

What department are you working with at Eden? This Summer I am interning with the Communications Department as the Volunteer Programs Intern. As the Volunteer Programs Intern, I help manage and navigate our volunteer services by surveying volunteer interest, advertising our volunteer programs, communicating with both external and internal members, and more!

What brought you to apply to Eden? I applied to Eden because of their service-driven mission to assist community members in having access to sustainability through service enhanced housing. Without hesitation, I knew that Eden's vision to provide equal access for all would be a rewarding movement to be apart of -- so I applied! In addition, I wanted to find an opportunity that allowed me to give back to my own community and I found just that, here at Eden.

What have you enjoyed most about your experience with Eden? While Eden has many great aspects, I have truly enjoyed the welcoming environment here and Eden's initiative to ensure that the interns are heightening their career experience while serving with Eden. I have gained much insight from being with Eden, which I am excited to apply towards my future plans.

Fun fact? My mum and I have the same birthday!

Alfonso Madrigal

What college/university do/did you attend, and what did you study? University of California, Berkeley; Architecture

What department are you working with at Eden?  Facilities Support Intern

What brought you to apply to Eden? Rather than working for an architecture firm, I wanted to intern with an agency that could give me more thorough insight on how buildings operate and allow me to learn from a more detail-oriented perspective within design. In addition, working for a nonprofit after graduation has always interested me. Being able to experience the environment as a student has been an eye-opening experience.

What have you enjoyed most about your experience with Eden? What I have enjoyed most with my experience at Eden is the interactive culture between the agency and its tenants.

Fun fact? I did the impossible and reserved a campsite at Yosemite days before the trip

Lillian Martin

What college/university do/did you attend, and what did you study? I attend California State University East Bay, with a major in American History and a minor in Anthropology

What department are you working with at Eden? I am working with the Development department.

What brought you to apply to Eden? I was referred to BAHIP (Bay Area Housing Internship Program), with TNDC and Eden being the top contenders. Eden is closer to my home, my school, and my livelihood and felt like a better decision in the long run to serve the community I see every single day.

What have you enjoyed most about your experience with Eden? I have enjoyed the wide array of tasks and management that I am allowed to facilitate and carry out myself. In just five weeks I’ve already visited multiple sites, participated in NPH Brown Bags, groundbreakers, and inside the office have helped create contracts and email both businesses and coworkers to progress our projects. Teddy has been an amazing help and a wonderful boss to me, and I look forward to continuing my work with him.

Fun fact? I will be graduating with my Bachelors in the Fall, and walking with my fellow peers in May of 2020.

What have you enjoyed most about your experience with Eden? What I have enjoyed most about this experience is all of the learning I have been able to engage in. I feel like I’ve been able to develop so many skills ranging from administrative skills to non-routine evaluation-based research projects.
